Yesterday I had an opportunity to connect with 30 beautiful young ladies from Westview's Success Beyond Limits (SBL) program. These young women will be attending Westview Centennial Secondary School in the Community of Jane and Finch in North York Ontario.

Thanks to the recommendation by one of my former high school teachers/mentors (Mrs. Pat Saul), I was connected to the SBL program to conduct workshops aimed at helping the young women in the program.

We discussed Social Media and Self Esteem: Staying Focused and Sane in The Age of Selfies and Snap Chat

The young women were an absolute pleasure to serve.

The SBL program has a special place in my heart because it is housed in my former high school, Westview Centennial Secondary School. This is a school located in Jane/Finch and in a community that is often featured in media for the less than stellar 'newsworthy' stories.

What Jane/Finch was for me, was my training ground. The school of hard knocks if you will. I blossomed into the woman I am today because of my experiences growing up in this community.

Though there are common challenges coming out of Jane/Finch that you would find in any other urban community that is faced with economic inequality, social stigmas, adversity, and poverty, it is truly a unique community filled with heart, diversity and an incredible resolve to overcome obstacles.

Within Jane/Finch, you will find plenty of success stories, countless young people who are making a difference, teachers with heart, community members with guts and grit, and a tapestry of multiculturalism that fosters tolerance, love, and respect for shared human experiences.

Jane/Finch made me. When given the opportunity to speak to young people in my community (it will always be home), I feel blessed and honoured.

When I coauthored my book My Style, My Way, these were the young women I had in my vision for how I would use this book and my story to encourage them. Being a motivational speaker is a passion of mine and I use it to serve youth, particularly those who are faced with learning how to rise above adversity. I can relate to them on many levels, as I've lived similar experiences.

Thank you to Ms. Saul and the coordinators of the SBL program for inviting me to conduct these workshops. It was truly an honour.

Topic of the Month: Executive Presence

Good morning and happy Tuesday

I’m back from an action-packed vacation and ready to start my week, month and new quarter feeling re-energized.

This month I will be sharing tips on Executive Presence (also known as Leadership Presence, Leadership Brand, Executive Image)

This is a topic that eludes many professionals especially those who are visible minorities or who socially have not had access to executive ranks for a myriad of reasons

There are codes, common language, and behaviours that are accepted as norms within the senior management and executive ranks. If that is your aspiration, understanding some of the nuances and making them work to your advantage can propel you further ahead in your career.

Stay tuned in the month of April as we dive into this topic

A Brand Must Evolve

Rebranding_TecaCameron

Your brand is the authentic story that you create and the experience that you leave behind. If your brand is to stay top of mind, it must evolve over time.

Throwing it back to 11 years ago when I first decided to create my personal and business brand. I started as an Image Consultant. My vision, to help people look good and feel good so that they have the confidence to take charge of their life.

The process was always organic for me. As a creative, I wanted to do it all. My first logo was chosen by a designer. It was light blue and lime green. My company named was Teca Cameron Image Management Agency. I had a big vision and still do. The name sounded right...at the time.

Was it me? At the time, I felt it could be. I molded to the brand. Those were the colours of the moment. It worked. Was it authentically me? Not entirely. The name over time became complicated. People didn't get it. My story was muzzled.

Then in 2013, I did it again. This time, after a long hiatus, I changed my vision for my brand. I phased into leadership development, training and coaching because it was in alignment with the corporate vision that I initially had for my brand. It worked, yet something was still missing.

Fast forward to 2017, many experiences, much research, time spent finding my tribe, the people I want and desire to work with who are in alignment with my vision and who need the help I can provide.

I have arrived.

My brand story has evolved to a place where I feel it tells my story. It creates the experience that I desire.  My chosen colours (gold, white, red/orange, black with hints of yellow)  speak to who I am at my core and the energy I wish to share with others. Every detail down to the fonts selected for my brand has been given careful thought.

So...this long story is to say...

I'm putting out the old and bringing in something new. I believe in re-engineering, re-positioning and pivoting when it is required.

Stay tuned for my re-branded logo, name and pictures. I will continue to share the evolution of my brand, as I help you to build your own.

My brand is who I am.

Why Taking a Pause...Can Get You Ahead

Why Taking a Pause...Can Get You Ahead

"Learning to Pause Allows Growth to Catch Up With You" John C. Maxwell

Do you take the time to reflect upon your life? It can be a challenge when juggle so much. Yet reflecting has been proven to help evaluate our experiences.

Are you prepared to face yourself?

LawofMirror (1).png

Oh the Mirror!

That  dreaded little piece of reflective equipment. I remember there was a time when I used to absolutely dislike looking in the mirror (literally and figuratively). There was this thing happening with my self-esteem that just would not allow me to feel comfortable looking back at myself. A lot of it stemmed from the fact that I felt very 'unpretty' , but also because I just didn't like who I thought I was. That was a period where I can honestly say I did not value myself. I was young, uncertain of my identity, confused about my purpose. I assessed my value based on what I assumed others thought about me. Fundamentally, I was lost.

Have you ever felt a strong dislike toward yourself? Maybe because of something physical or maybe more to do with something that you did or maybe because of who someone else told you that you were/are?

Well, can I tell you something? It's normal for us to go through periods of low self esteem. It's a part of getting to know who we are. What keeps us stuck though is when we are unable to see our worth entirely. When our self esteem remains low and we are unable to see value in who are are.

For me, getting unstuck was really about discovering my overall beauty and learning not to judge myself by my past mistakes.  When I was able to do that, I invited morning sessions where I would just stare in the mirror...just because. I was ok with interacting with people because I knew my worth. I no longer feared 'what are they going to say about me'. That became irrelevant. When that happened, I was able to focus on my growth both personally and professionally.

In the 15 Invaluable Laws of Growth, John Maxwell shares with us that many people fail to reach their full potential because of low self-esteem. I have also found this to be true throughout my journey. The people that are the most successful are those who have a firm confidence in who they are and what they are all about.

Whether your mirror is physical or mental, are you able to face it? Are you able to look back at what is being presented to you and say that you are alright with the reflection? If not, how can you work on building your self-esteem so that you are in a position to really appreciate and value all that you are and can potentially be?

You are worth the effort, time and energy needed to develop yourself. If you see value in yourself, you will add value to yourself.

Weekly Challenge: Let's Grow with Intention

'Growth doesn't just happen' John C. Maxwell.

Can I give you a challenge for this week ahead?

Write down on a piece of paper 1 goal that you would like to achieve in the next 3 months. Something you have been longing to do but you haven't yet figured out how you will get it done.

After you write that down, start envisioning what your life would look like when you achieve that goal. How will you feel? What will you be doing? how will it benefit others? Envision it with as much detail as possible.

Building a personal brand that distinguishes us from the other billions of people in this world starts with the decision to be intentional about our personal growth.

Let's do a check in next week to see how we did with this visioning exercise.

Who's with me? Are you ready? Let's go!
